Boutros Al
Maari (born in Damascus, Syria, in 1968) is a Syrian artist, writer, and
cartoonist who currently lives and works in Hamburg, Germany. He holds a
diploma in Graphic Arts from the Faculty of Fine Arts at Damascus University,
and furthered his academic pursuits in Paris, where he obtained a Master's
(1999) and a Ph.D. (2006) in Social Anthropology from EHESS (École des Hautes
Études en Sciences Sociales). He also served as a professor at the Faculty of
Fine Arts at Damascus University from 2008 to 2012.
Al Maari is a
prolific author and illustrator, and his work has been published in many Arabic
and international newspapers and publications. His paintings have been featured
in numerous exhibitions worldwide, with solo shows in Paris, Hamburg, Beirut,
and Damascus, and his work is included in collections such as the Syrian
Ministry of Culture and the Institut du Monde Arabe (IMA) in Paris.
Boutros Al
Maari's painting style is a unique blend of Neo-Expressionism with elements of
Cubism, characterized by his distinctive use of monochromatic figures and
elongated, caricatured faces. His work is a fascinating dialogue between his
Syrian roots and his experiences in Europe, reflecting a profound sense of
nostalgia and a commentary on social and political issues.
A strong
sense of nostalgia for his homeland is a recurring theme. His early
inspirations came from the "sights and sounds of the souks and tea houses
of Damascus," and these traditional elements, such as the tarbouche (a
type of hat) and the narghile (water pipe), are frequent motifs in his work.
